D.C. police have arrested a suspect in the killing of a 71-year-old woman in Southwest Washington, officials said.

Officers responded to the unit block of Elmira Street SW on Friday at about 11 p.m. for a burglary report, according to a police report. There, officers found Sylvia Matthews, 71, inside a home, unconscious with a serious head injury. She was taken to a hospital and died from her injuries Saturday, police said.

Michael Garrett, 66, of no fixed address, was arrested at the scene Friday, according to police. He was charged with assault with intent to kill, and police said a preliminary investigation indicated the incident was “domestic in nature.”

Police said detectives are working with the U.S. attorney’s office to file additional charges related to Matthews’ death. Additional details were not immediately available.
